The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the prescription omega-3 fatty acid medication only for the treatment of triglyceride levels, which are immensely high, i.e., above 500 mg/dl.
According to the authors of the current advisory, a 4-gram daily dosage could minimize the triglyceride levels of 200–499 mg/dl between 20% and 30%. This would apply to the majority of people with high triglyceride levels. Researchers also stated that medication comprising of both EPA and DHA did not increase the levels of LDL cholesterol, which is the “bad” type, in people having triglyceride levels below 500 mg/dl.

According to the research, people having high triglyceride levels who took EPA-only medication along with statin therapy has a 25% decrease in major cardiovascular events such as stroke and heart attack.

Experts also suggest that one should not have the treatment of high triglyceride levels with nonprescription omega-3 supplements as dietary supplements having omega-3 fatty acids are not regulated by the FDA. For the long term management of high triglycerides, these supplements should not be used in place of prescription medication.

AHA also recommends that consumption of omega-3 fatty acids in fish could minimize the heart disease and stroke risk and states that eating oily fish, like mackerel, salmon, lake trout, and albacore tuna, twice a week will be beneficial.
